Courland and Curonian Spit

Courland (Kurland, Curonia, Couronia, Курляндия, Kuršas, Kurlandia), is one of the old historical and cultural regions of Latvia. Old Courland situated close to nowadays Western Latvia area. The Curonian (or Courland) Spit for its side is a skinny stretch of land which separates the Curonian Lagoon from the Baltic Sea. The peninsula is 98 km long and 0.4-4 km wide. The Curonian Spit is situated in the area of Lithuania (Klaipeda) and Russia (Kaliningrad). So it forms two separate national parks: the Curonian Spit National Park in Lithuania and the Kurshskaya Kosa National Park in the Russian Federation.

The Curonian Spit area is famous for sandy beaches, pine forests, and other special nature views. So it is a popular tourist destination. Yet the area is also very fragile and special efforts are needed to preserve it. UNESCO designated the Curonian Spit as a World Heritage site in 2000. They say that the almost 100 km long beach of the Curonian Spit is the best in the world – who knows (?). Anyway for a curious tourist it is absolutely worth visiting.
