Osallistuttuani lukuisiin kansallisiin ja kansainvälisiin valokuvanäyttelyihin pidin ensimmäisen yksityisnäyttelyni Valokuvataiteen Museossa Helsingissä 3.6.-10.7. 1983 ja saman näyttelyn myöhemmin Galleria Vallmogårdissa, Kauniaisissa 3.11.-3.12.1983. Näyttelyn nimi oli “Hetkiä ja ikuisuuksia” ja se perustui edeltävän kahdeksan vuoden työhön.
Kuten jo em. näyttelyn käsiohjelmassa kirjoitin, olin tuolloin omaksumassa mm. amerikkalaisen valokuvaajan ja valokuvapedagogin Minor Whiten perusajatusta, että valokuvassa tärkeintä on sen merkitys kuvaajalle itselleen. Tätä ajatusta olen pitänyt keskeisenä senkin jälkeen yrittäen kuitenkin valokuvailmaisun yleisten keinojen kautta saada kuviini kiinnostavuutta myös ulkopuolisille.
Tältä pohjalta työskentelin vuodet 1983-87 määrätietoisesti seuraavan näyttelyprojektini parissa. Näyttelyn työnimenä oli “Salattu lapsuus”. Kaikki kuvat olivat omasta lapsesta. Tämä kokonaisuus oli kypsä esitettäväksi vuonna -87. Yllättäen ko. lapsi kuitenkin kuoli auto-onnettomuudessa itsenäisyyspäivänä -87 ja asiaan liittyvien paineiden vuoksi näyttely jäi tuolloin kokonaan pitämättä.
Muuttamatta perusajatustani olen tämän jälkeen työskennellyt uusien projektien parissa välttäen kuitenkin sitä lähestymistapaa, joka em. kokonaisuuteen olennaisesti liittyi. Yrittäessäni kuvata lapsen sisäistä maailmaa loin kuviin tarkoituksellisen vieraantuneen ilmeen. Jälkeenpäin ajateltuna lopputuloksena on vaikutelma, että kuvissa näkyy kuolema jo ennakolta. Susan Sontagin tunnettu ajatus, että “kuvat voivat saada merkityksiä myöhemmin”, toteutuu tässä ennalta arvaamattomalla tavalla.
Esittäessäni ko. kokoelman kuvia viime aikoina olen saanut lukuisia kehotuksia viedä kesken jääneen työn päätökseen. Viimeksi ranskalainen valokuvaaja Lucien Clergue kehotti minua saattamaan kuvat kirjaksi tai vähintään näyttelyksi. Hän lupasi myös pohjustaa näyttelyn saamista Arlesin valokuvafestivaaleille.
Koska itsekin olen tuntenut, että asian loppuunsaattaminen on tärkeää, olen valinnut kokonaisuuden hiukan toisin ja vedostanut pääosan kuvista uudelleen esittäen ne nyt näyttelynä “In Memoriam”. Vaikka aihe on kovin henkilökohtainen, toivon sen avaavan näkökulmia elämään myös näyttelyn katsojille. Kiitän Hämeen läänin taidetoimikuntaa, jonka myöntämä kohdeapuraha on osaltaan vaikuttanut näyttelyn toteutumiseen.

Photographic Exhibition

After taking part of several collective exhibitions I had my first private exhibition in the Photographic Museum of Finland 3.6.-10.7.1983 and later on in the Gallery Valmogård in Kauniainen 3.11.-3.12.1983. The name of the exhibition was “Instances and Eternities” and it was based on the work of preceding eight years.
As I wrote in the catalogue of the exhibition, on those times I was embracing the basic idea of American photographer and photo pedagogue Minor White, that the most important thing in photography is its meaning to the photographer himself. This idea I have kept in mind even if I also have tried to get my photographs be interesting to others using general photographical means of expression.
On this basis I worked years 1983-87 within the next exhibition project. The introductory name of the exhibition was “Hidden Childhood”. All the pictures represented my own child. The wholeness was ready to express in the year 1987. Unexpectedly the child however died in a car accident in 1987 and it resulted that the exhibition did not realised.
After these incidents I have worked without chancing the basic ideas about photographic expression I had dedicated. Anyway there was one feature which I had to avoid and it is associated with the earlier photographs. When I tried to percieve the inner world of the child I captured to the pictures one kind of alienated look. Afterwards this appearance can be interpreted so that death can be seen in advance in the pictures. The idea of Susan Sontag that the meaning of photographs can come up afterwards seems to realize here in an unexpected way.
When I have shown the pictures of this collection lately, I have got many request to complete the project I have started. The last was photographer Lucien Clegue, who advised me to make a book or at least an exhibition from these pictures. He also promised to set up an exhibition in Arles Photography Festival.
I also felt that it is important to bring the case to the end. That’s why I assembled the wholeness little differently and after reprinting most of the pictures I express them now as the collection “In Memoriam”. Even if the subject is very intimate I hope that it can open some new perspectives also to the audience. I thank the Art Committee of Häme Province for the stipend for this exhibition. It had also impact on the actualization of this exhibition.
