Vuonna 1992 järjestettiin Voionmaan opistolla yhden alan tunnetuimman valokuvaajan, Lucien Clerguen vetämä pitkälle edistyneille valokuvaajille tarkoitettu Nudeworkshop. Osallistuin kurssille lähinnä työni puolesta toimien tulkkina ja assistenttina. Suuri yllätykseni oli, että kaikista osallistujista minulla oli eniten esitettäviä alastonvalokuvia. Näin siitä huolimatta, että en koskaan ollut omasta mielestäni tehnyt mitään tämän kaltaista työtä. Tuolloin minulla olikin vain kuvia, joissa ihminen on alasti, ei alastonvalokuvia.
Ehkä kuitenkin Clerguen workshopin innoittamana aloin työskennellä alastonmallien kanssa yhä useammin ja tietoisemmin. Myöhemmin loin opistolle myös uuden nudeworkshopin perinteen. Erityisesti lyhytkurssitoimintaan on useina vuosina kuulunut myös nudekuvauksen jakso, joista varsinkin viime vuosina, olen itse vetänyt yhä useampia.
Omissa töissäni olen hyvin tietoisesti pyrkinyt säilyttämään oman valokuvaajaluonteeni. Tämä tarkoittaa sitä, että toisaalta olen halunnut kuvissani pitää yllä jotain klassisen alastonkuvauksen traditiosta: selkeydestä, yksinkertaisuudesta ja kauneudesta. Aivan yhtä voimakkaasti olen kuitenkin halunnut säilyttää saman monitasoisuuden ja -merkityksellisyyden, mitä itse pidän erityisesti taiteellisesta orientaatiosta lähtevien valokuvien tärkeimpänä ominaisuutena. Tällaiseen olen tietoisesti pyrkinyt myös aiemmissa yksityisnäyttelyissäni ”Hetkiä ja ikuisuuksia” Valokuvataiteen museossa Helsingissä 1983 ja ”In Memoriam” Valokuvakeskus Nykyajassa Tampereella 1993.
Näyttelyyn on valittu 42 vuosina 1989 – 2001 kuvattua mustavalkoista alastonvalokuvaa, jotka on vedostettu perinteisellä käsityömenetelmällä kuitupohjaiselle hopeapaperille. Vedokset ovat kooltaan noin 24 cm x 30 cm – 40 cm x 50 cm. Lisäksi näyttelyyn on valittu 10 tietokoneelle skannattua mustavalkoista kuvaa, jotka ovat käyneet läpi kuvankäsittelyn. Lukuun ottamatta kuvaa no 47 tietokonekäsittelyssä ei ole kuitenkaan puututtu kuvan autenttisuuteen.
Olen viimeisen 12 vuoden ajan toiminut rehtorina ja valokuvauksen opettajana, mutta omaa taiteellista työtä olen voinut tehdä vain sivutoimisesti. Tämä on merkinnyt lukemattomia hiljaisia viikonloppuja pimiön yksinäisyydessä tai tietokoneen tasaisessa hurinassa. Tästä ajasta kiitän perhettäni, joka on sen minulle ilman suurempia perheriitoja suonut. Lisäksi kiitän Ilford Anitec Oy:tä joka on ystävällisesti lahjoittanut valokuvausmateriaalia sekä pimiö- että tietokonetyöskentelyn mahdollistamiseksi. Toivottavasti tulokset tyydyttävät myös materiaalien valmistajaa.
Suurimmat kiitokseni esitän kuitenkin kaikille kuvieni malleille siitä saumattomasta ja äärimmäisen hyvin sujuneesta yhteistyöstä joka joskus on voinut, ainakin ulkopuolisen silmin näyttää hiukan eriskummalliselta. Ilman sitä näitä kuvia ei kuitenkaan olisi koskaan syntynyt.

In the year 1992 a work shop leaded by Lucien Clergue was organized in Voionmaa Institute. Clergue was one of the most well known photographers on the field of nude photographing. I took part to the workshop mostly as an interpreter and assistant. A big surprise to me was to notice that I had maybe quantitatively most nude photographs to exhibit. Despite the fact that in my own opinion I had never done this kind of work. On that time I maybe had only pictures in which people were naked, but not nude photographs.
Maybe as inspiration of the Clergue workshop I started to work with nude models more often and more consciously. In the Institute I later created new tradition of nude workshops. For several years nude photography has been included in the in the course program of the institute. In the last few years I have also leaded many of them.
In my own works I have very consciously tried to maintain my own character as a photographer. This means that, in another had, I have tried to keep in mind something about the tradition, clearness, simplicity and beauty of classical nude photography. In another hand, I have as strongly tried to preserve the same many levelness and ambiguity which I consider the most important feature of artistic photographs. The same aim I have I have tried ty reach in my previous exhibitions “Instances and Eternities” in the Photographic Museum of Finland in Helsinki 1983 and “In Memoriam” in the Valokuvakeskus Nykyaika Tampere in 1993.
The exhibition includes 42 black and white photographs from the years 1989-2001. They are in traditional way hand printed on fiber based silver paper. The prints are about 24cm-30cm to 40cmx50ch by size. In addition there is 10 pictures which are scanned to digital form and gone through image processing. Anyway the authenticity of the pictures is retained except the print no 47.
The latest 12 years I have worked as a principal and teacher of photography and it has been restricted to concentrate to own artistic work. This has meant many and many silent weekends in lonely darkroom or steady hum of the computer. For this free time I thank my family, which has allowed it to me without any remarkable family disputes. In addition, I am grateful to The Ilford Anitec Company, which has supported the exhibition by giving materials for darkroom and printing work. I Hope that the manufacturer of these materials is satisfied to the results.
The greatest thanks I present anyway to the models of the photographs. Collaboration has been excellent and seamless. For outsiders it has sometimes might have look a little strange but without it these pictures had not ever come true.
