Olen tehnyt työurani lähes kokonaisuudessaan työväenliikkeen ja aikuiskoulutuksen parissa. Työväen Akatemia, Kiljavan opisto, Voionmaan opisto ja Opetushallitus ovat olleet tärkeimmät työnantajat. Jäin eläkkeelle kesällä 2014 ja aloitin ”kuvallisen elämäkertani kirjoittamisen”. Siitä alkua on näkyvissä nettisivuillani. Arkistostani löytyy mm. yli 20 negatiivimappia (n. 1600 negatiivia) sekä toistaiseksi hahmottamaton määrä dia-aineistoa. Näistä olen koonnut nettisivuilleni mm. 1970-luvun alun innostuksen inspiroiman kokonaisuuden Street Photographs 1975-2000.
Tässä yhteydessä kävi ilmi, että huomattava osa katukuva-aineistosta on peräisin erilaista työväen tapahtumista, vappumielenosoituksista ja lakkokulkueista. Kokonaisuus osoittautui niin selkeäksi ja yhtenäiseksi, että jätin sen toistaiseksi suurimmaksi osaksi erilleen muuta mahdollista esitystapaa ajatellen. Osa tästä kokonaisuudesta onkin nyt esillä valokuvanäyttelyn muodossa. Näyttelytilan koon vuoksi “Punaisia lippuja” -näyttelyssä keskitytään värikuviin ja neljään työväen joukkotapahtumaan 1970-luvulla.
Lahden Fellmanin pellolle pystytettiin Punavankimuistomerkki vuonna 1978. Tapahtuma oli laaja ja huomiota herättävä. Työskentelin jo tuolloin työväenliikkeen palveluksessa TUL:n Lahden Kaleva -urheiluseuran toiminnanjohtajana ja osallistuin myös tapahtuman järjestelyihin. Varsinaisen juhlapäivän vietin kuvaten kaikkea tapahtuman alkukulkueesta Työväen marssiin saakka. Lahden Kalevan toiminnanjohtajan ominaisuudessa kuvasin kolmen päivän ajan tavallaan sisältä päin myös TUL:n liittojuhlia 1979.
Opiskeluvuosinani Tampereella kuvasin myös työväen vappua. SKDL ja SKP marssi Tammelan torilta tai Keskustorilta Pyynikille ja SDP Työväen talolta Ratinan Stadionille. Seurasin yleensä ensimmäistä kulkuetta Hämeenpuistoon ja sieltä taas toista kulkuetta Ratinalle. 1970-luvulla työväen joukkotapahtumat olivat laajoja ja näyttäviä. Solidaarisuus oli keskeinen viesti. Mielestäni tämä käy hyvin ilmi myös kuva-aineistosta. Näyttely on toteutettu Kansan Sivistysrahaston ja Riihi säätiön rahoituksella ja kuvat on tarkoitus jättää Työväenmuseo Werstaan kokoelmiin, jottei kaikki tuo kokonaan unhottuisi.

I have spent all my working career in Labor movement and adult education. Workers’ Academy, Kiljava Institute, Voionmaa Institute and the Finnish National Board of Education have been the most important employers. I retired in the summer 2014 and started “writing my pictorial biography”. The beginning of this is visible on my website. In my archive there are more than 20 negative folders (approx. 1600 negatives) and an uncountable amount of slide material. Inspired by the enthusiasm of the early 1970s I have compiled on my website series Street photographs 1975-2000 and other similar photographic material.
In this connection it turned out that a significant part of the street image material comes from various workers’ events, May Day demonstrations and strike marches. The whole turned out to be so clear and coherent that I left it aside for the time being, thinking about another possible way of presentation. Part of this whole is now on display in the form of a photo exhibition. Due to the size of the exhibition space, the Red Flags exhibition focuses on color images and four mass workers’ events in the 1970s.
In 1978, the Red prisoners’ monument was erected on the Fellman’s field in Lahti. The event was extensive and attention-grabbing. At that time, I was already working for the labor movement as executive director of TUL’s Lahti Kaleva Sports Club and I also participated in the organization of the event. I spent the actual day of the celebration shooting everything from the opening procession of the event to the Workers’ March. Also in the role as the executive director of Lahti Kaleva I photographed TUL’s union celebration in 1979 for three days, in a way, from the inside.
During my student years in Tampere, I also photographed the workers’ demonstrations on the First of May. Communists and left-wing socialists marched from the Tammela Market or the Central Market to Pyynikki and Social Democrats from Workers’ house to the Ratina Stadium. I usually followed the first procession to the Häme park and from there the second procession to the Ratina Stadium. In the 1970s, mass workers’ events were extensive and spectacular. Solidarity was the central message. I think this is also evident from the image material. The exhibition has been realized with funding from the People’s Cultural Fund and the Riihi Foundation, and the pictures are to be left in the collections of the Finnish Labour Museum Werstas, so that everything will not be completely forgotten.
