Volgograd

Originally the name of Volgograd was Tsaritsyn. In 1925 the city was renamed Stalingrad after Joseph Stalin who had leading role in defending the city in the civil war 1918-20. In 1961 the name was changed again. Now it became as Volgograd (Volga city). In this time the reason was so called de-Stalinization, which was leaded by First Secretary Nikita Khrushchev. Afterwards there have been many proposals to change the name back again as Stalingrad.

Probably most of western people know the city better as Stalingrad. The reason is one maybe the most remarkable battle in history. The Red Army defeated German troops in the battle of Stalingrad 23.8.1942 – 2.2.1943. For a curious tourist all the marks about these events give an important reason to visit the city. On the contrary of all speech about gray industrial city Volgograd is nowadays modern, spacious city with wide streets and beautiful parks. Fortunately war is now only a memory and Volgograd can show its finest sides.
